TTU's U: Drive (Centralized File Storage for Users) -
Powered by Xythos

This will be available on Wednesday September 10th.

Getting Started in a TTU Office by Adding a Network Place

Getting Started in the PC Labs Getting Started from Home Additional features

Beginning Fall 2008, students and faculty will be able to store documents on the U: drive and easily access this drive from the PC Labs, home, and offices.  You will be using your PC Lab account (student email account, faculty PC Lab account) to login.

Note to Macintosh users:

Some APPLE written applications, such as KeyNote, actually consist of multiple underlying files.  In order to successfully upload a file created in a program like KeyNote, right-click on the file(s) and select "Make archive" or "Compress" depending on the version of Mac OS you are running.  Then upload the compressed version of the file.

Getting Started from a TTU Office

To easily access the files storage, you will want to add a network place in Windows.

FIRST TIME ONLY (To create your user folder):
  • Open a web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox required).
  • Go to http://files.tntech.edu
  • Login using your PC Lab username and password.
  • Click OK.
  • Logout

OR

  • Login to a PC Lab Machine
  • Logout

Creating a Network Place in Windows XP

  • Click on My Computer icon on the desktop, or from the Start menu select "My Computer"
  • Select My Network Places
  • Select Add Network Place
  • The Network Wizard opens - click Next
  • Select Choose another network location
  • Type the URL: https://files.tntech.edu/users/username  (substitute your own username-all small letters).
  • When the login box appears, use your PC Lab username and password.
  • Type a name for this location or accept the default.
  • Click Finish

Mapping a Network Drive in Windows Vista

  • Click on the Computer icon on the desktop, or from the Start menu select "Computer"
  • Select Map network drive

  • Select a drive letter.
  • Click Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures.

  • The Network Wizard opens - click Next
  • Select Choose a custom network location
  • Type the URL: https://files.tntech.edu/users/username  (substitute your own username-all small letters).
  • When the login box appears, use your PC Lab username and password.
  • Type a name for this location or accept the default.
  • Click Finish

Now you can easily drag files to this location.  If you had previously set up a network place for the old file storage system on \\zeus.pclab.tntech.edu\users\username , you can now drag files from here to the new location.

Remember, at the end of Fall term, the old storage system will be permanently removed and any remaining files not stored elsewhere will be lost.

Tip:  If you attempt to edit files directly in the network window, you may be UNABLE to do so, even if the software program is on your computer.  Available Fall 2008, faculty may wish to purchase the Xythos client ($22) driver (ITS Purchases) to allow you to do this.  However, MS Office files WILL be editable in the network window.
